SUMMARY:Massachusetts Senate Hearing on the Census
DESCRIPTION:In September 2026\, the Census Bureau proposed significant changes to residency criteria and demographic questions in the 2030 census. The proposed changes would eliminate questions related to race\, ethnicity\, and sexual orientation\, exclude most non-citizens from apportionment counts\, and alter how seasonal residents of states and those living in group quarters (e.g.\, dorm buildings\, nursing homes) are counted. \nThis hearing is the first of a two-part series discussing the potential ramifications of policy changes like those proposed by the Census Bureau. It will include testimony and presentations from experts and public officials about how the proposed changes to census residency criteria could impact Massachusetts\, were they to be in effect in 2030. Particular focus will be given to the proposals regarding group quarters and seasonal residents and the exclusion of most non-citizens from the census count.

DESCRIPTION:handsoffourcens.us is hosting a series of weekly briefings to share our analysis of comments submitted on the decennial census proposed rule (tinyurl.com/decennial-census-FRN). \nJoin us for a weekly update that breaks down how many comments support or oppose the proposed changes\, the issues stakeholders are raising\, key themes and notable details from the comments\, and any emerging and late-breaking topics. \nThe briefing series will begin on Friday\, September 25\, from 2:30-3pm ET\, and will then be on Wednesdays from 3-3:30pm ET. Briefings will continue after the November 2 comment deadline until the Census Bureau has published all submitted comments. \nThe webinars will feature data policy and census experts\, as well as some special guest appearances.
