SUMMARY:Census Book Club: Making Hispanic
DESCRIPTION:The Leadership Conference is excited to announce that we are launching the next round of the Census Book Club! The book club will feature a series of books to deepen our understanding of the census and its impacts. Book club members will read one book every quarter and meet as a group to engage in a conversation with the author. We look forward to compiling a comprehensive reading list for census advocates\, while coming together to learn more about the rich history and implications of the census. \nOur next book of the Census Book Club will be Making Hispanic: How Activists\, Bureaucrats\, and Media Constructed a New American by G. Cristinia Mora. Mora explores how Puerto Ricans\, Mexicans\, and Cubans became known as “Hispanics” and “Latinos” in the United States and details the scope of this phenomenon. She uses an organizational lens and traces how activists\, bureaucrats\, and media executives in the 1970s and ’80s created a new identity category—and by doing so\, permanently changed the racial and political landscape of the nation. \nRegister here for Census Book Club and a conversation session with the author: April 4th at 1PM ET. The first 10 participants to sign up for the book club and a conversation session will receive a free copy of the book! Selected participants will be notified by email. Attendance at the author conversation sessions will be limited\, so register early! \nWHAT: Census Book Club! \nWHEN: Author Talkback April 4th at 1PM ET \nRSVP: Sign up here! DESCRIPTION:The Leadership Conference is excited to announce that we are launching the second round of the Census Book Club! \nThe second book of the Census Book Club will be The Limits of Whiteness by Neda Maghbouleh. Maghbouleh tells for the first time the compelling\, often heartbreaking story of how a white American immigrant group can become brown and what such a transformation says about race in America. \nRegister here for Census Book Club and one of two conversation sessions with the author: January 24th at 4PM ET. The first 10 participants to sign up for the book club and a conversation session will receive a free copy of the book! Selected participants will be notified by email.
