Last month, the Census Bureau proposed significant changes to the decennial census with a rule that harms our communities through exclusion and discrimination.
The proposed rule: excludes millions of noncitizens, including undocumented immigrants, visa, DACA, and TPS holders, and refugees and asylum seekers awaiting adjudication from representation; omits Census questions about race and ethnicity or sexual orientation; and, along with other changes, will result in the undercount of millions of US residents.
The impacts of this proposal would be severe and far-reaching. We would lose protections against discrimination; funding for schools, health clinics, and social services; and fair representation in government.
