The Stakes are Still High: Weighing in on the Proposed Census Rules Changes

A proposed Census Bureau rule would leave many Michigan residents out of the census count, including international students, workers on visas and refugees. It would count Michigan snowbirds in Florida and Arizona instead of at home, and strip race and ethnicity questions from the census.

Census data guides funding for schools, roads, and hospitals; an incorrect count would have major consequences for understanding who lives in our communities and whether our voting districts represent their residents. It’s crucial that we push back on this proposed rule change, but the deadline to speak up is October 13, which doesn’t give us much time to organize.
